Week two finds us back for more fun while learning to use Dreamweaver MX. This week we learned how to add a background image, as well as regular images, and how to align them to the page as well as the text. We also learned how to link an image to another page, add a favicon, use HTML styles, edit the font list, use special characters, and add meta tags and named anchors. Debbie, I also used your font choices because I really liked them. My practice page can be seen here. I used enough text from the linked webpage to wrap around the image, as well as the necessary special character, so I hope I'm not in trouble with Starbucks for borrowing their text! I used the property inspector to change the sizes and colors of fonts, and also added a named anchor and a favicon to this page. The images on this page are of Mme. Butterfly, one of my cloth dolls. I created her from a purchased pattern, and, like the others, she began telling me who she was and how she wanted to look as we went along. I hope to do a few more as Christmas gifts, if I can tear myself away from Dreamweaver long enough to spend some time with the sewing machine. You can see more of my cloth dolls on this page. Mme. Butterfly has hair made from variegated silk embroidery floss. Her quilted wings are appliquéd with scraps of contrasting fabric and gold thread, and highlighted with sparkle paint. At present, she hangs in the window of my sewing room and sometimes tries to fly out on a windy day. Fortunately, she never gets past the lace curtains. If my favicon worked, you should see that she has also been used as the icon image. I made the icon myself with a really wonderful program called Axialis Icon Workshop. You can download a demo that will work for 30 days at www.axialis.com, and it's really worth a look. I've experimented with a couple icon creating programs and this one is by far the best I've found. Also, I optimized and resized the butterfly images in Fireworks MX, because they were a little large for the page.. Here is the view of the back of her wings.
I also used a new HTML style for my paragraphs, though it is a little confusing to call it a style and not be using CSS. It is helpful for me, at this point, not to even think about CSS, but just to take Dreamweaver MX step by step. I can see that I will need a lot of practice in using all these new tips to design my pages, but since it is so much fun, I don't think that will be a problem. I am glad to have worked with the alignment properties this week, to gain practice in adding images to my page without resorting to using tables. This concludes my work for week two, and don't forget to look at my new, improved Dreamweaver MX index page. See you next week!
